Why I invested

Gumroad strips away the complexity between creators and their customers. No storefronts to build, no payment infrastructure to manage, no marketing stack to assemble. A creator with something to sell can go from zero to revenue in minutes.

Sahil Lavingia built Gumroad with a clear philosophy: creators should own their relationship with their audience and keep most of what they earn. That alignment between platform and user is rare and hard to replicate.

The thesis

Creator tooling was entering an inflection point in 2021. More people were going independent, selling courses, ebooks, templates, software, and memberships directly. The platforms that made this frictionless would capture an enormous market.

Gumroad had already proven product-market fit with millions of creators and billions in gross merchandise volume. The business model scales naturally since every new creator brings their own audience, and the platform takes a small cut of each transaction.

What excites me

  1. Creator-first economics - Low fees, no monthly charges, creators keep the vast majority of revenue
  2. Proven scale - Billions in creator earnings processed, growing organically through creator word-of-mouth
  3. Simplicity as moat - The product stays focused on what matters: helping creators get paid
  4. Network effects - Each successful creator validates the platform for the next one
  5. Equity crowdfunding model - Gumroad's community-funded raise aligned investors with the creator mission
